The best thing a human can do is always be there for others not for him or herself only because you mostly can reach yourself but if anytime you could reach others, that would be something which life really worth to live it.
Allah give the most blessings to those who serve Awam-u-lnas. There is a narration in this regard:
Narrated by one of suhabeis:
Once there was a person who served Mecca and was doing all cleanliness and sweepings there. One day an angel came from Sky with a list of those who were praised by Allah Subahna wa taallah. The servant was expecting to see his name on top of the list due to him being a cleaner of Mecca but when Angel started narrating names of people in the list who were praised by Allah, there was no name of that servant.
He got so disappointed and cried while in bed for sleeping. That night someone came to his dream telling him you were not praised because you were only serving Allah while most Muslims do that but if you want to be praised serve subordinates of Allah (means all people who you can help).
From next morning he started helping anyone by any means he could and after sometimes again the Angel came with a list of people who were praised by Allah and when Angel started narrating names, that servant heard his name being on top of the list.
So, the moral of the narration is that if you help miserable people, you will get rewarded by Allah subhana wa taalah.
